Liam Hayes will have to foil his native county Meath in two weeks' time if Carlow are to remain in the All-Ireland SFC hunt.
The Barrowsiders have been pitted against Meath in this evening's draw for the first round of the All-Ireland championship qualifiers.
Carlow boss Hayes played for 12 years with Meath, winning two All-Irelands in 1987 and 1988, as well as two National League titles (1988, 1990). A lynchpin midfielder, he was one of five All-Stars for the Royals in '88.
Hayes took over as manager of Carlow in November 2004, succeeding Luke Dempsey. The former Skryne player's late father Jim played for Carlow for 12 years.
Hayes was touted for the vacant Meath managerial position last autumn, but admitted at the time: "It's flattering to be nominated but I gave my word to Carlow that I would be with them again next year."
Carlow lost to Laois this afternoon and now face a mouth-watering battle with Eamonn Barry's Royals.
All of the first round qualifiers will take place over the weekend of June 17/18, with the dates, throw-in times and venues to be decided.
All-Ireland champions Tyrone, who were first out of the draw drum, must play Louth, while Kildare or Offaly, who have been embroiled in a substitutions row this week, will take on Cavan.
Monaghan have been paired with Wicklow, Antrim face Clare, London will travel to Westmeath and Waterford will clash with Longford, who were only two points behind Leinster champions Dublin this afternoon.
Down, whose Ulster run came to an end in Ballybofey today, were drawn with Sligo.
