Microsoft has launched its Xbox games console, which comes with DVD player and internet connection, its first hardware product.

It will compete directly against Sony Playstation II [PS2]and Nintendo. Sales of Xbox will start in Ireland in March, 2002.

Nineteen games are available for Xbox during launch week and another 10 to 15 will come out by the end of the year.

In the US it is being sold for $299. The Irish launch of the product is due to take place in March, 2002.

Analysts are worried about how well Microsoft can perform in this space and have said that it must, in the long term, appeal to the mass market.
