Blast and petrol bombs were thrown at police today in Co Armagh.

Blast and petrol bombs were thrown at police today in Co Armagh.

Riot police were called in after trouble erupted during a security alert in Lake Street, Lurgan. Up to 15 houses were evacuated in the staunchly republican area.

Police appealed for calm but said there were no injuries. The railway line was closed.

In the early hours of this morning, it was reported that a suspicious object had been seen in the area. Army technical officers are examining something at the scene.

Lake Street and part of Antrim Road are closed.
