Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority have launched separate investigations after a man died in a workplace accident at University College Cork today.

Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority have launched separate investigations after a man died in a workplace accident at University College Cork today.

The accident happened at around 3pm this afternoon when staff were using a cherry picker to repair lighting on the main avenue on the campus.

It is understood the man- who was in his fifties - was struck by the cherry picker and sustained serious head injuries.

UCC has expressed its sympathy to man's family.

The College said the incident had left staff members deeply shocked.
