Taoiseach: Mortgage crisis report will not see 'blanket write-down'

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said a report to Government on how to deal with mortgage debt is "not the repository of all wisdom".

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said a report to Government on how to deal with mortgage debt is "not the repository of all wisdom".

It is to be published tomorrow after being discussed by Cabinet today, but it will not see a wide-scale scheme of debt forgiveness.

The Government is to hold a Dáil debate on the report next week to hear if any other solutions can be put on the table.

Mr Kenny has told the Dáil the solutions have to be around people who cannot pay rather than those who will not pay.

Mr Kenny said: "There will be no automatic blanket write-down, so you are going to get this report tomorrow if you have not received reports of it already".

"I'd like you to read it, I'd like you to study it over the weekend. You will have your opportunity to contribute to the debate here next week.

"If you have new ideas that are not currently in practice or recommended in this report, let's hear them from you."
