A 66-year-old man has been arrested today by police investigating the suspicious death of a 73-year-old woman in Co Down.

The woman’s body was found in a house in the High Street area of Portaferry at around 2pm yesterday.

A post-mortem examination is to be carried out to determine the cause of death.

SDLP councillor Joe Boyle said the local community was deeply shocked by the death.

He said: “This lady lived in the middle of the village and I knew her very well, in fact she was a customer at my takeaway business up to several times a week.

“There is a lot of shock and sadness in the village.

“This is a small community where everyone knows everyone else and we just don’t expect things like this to happen.”
