Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has condemned the recent violence in East Belfast.

Calm was restored to the area last night as political and community leaders continued efforts to defuse sectarian tensions.

But there was a large police presence in the area following the previous two nights' rioting.

Dissident republicans are being blamed for firing live rounds at members of the media on Tuesday.

Louth TD Adams said there is no public support for what has happened.

"My understanding is that this is a faction within the UVF, that it is an entirely contrived situation, that there is no community support for what happened within those loyalist working-class areas."
