ASTI surprised at Dempsey intentions

The Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland says it is surprised at the intentions of the Education Minister to hold information meetings on the issue of supervision and substitution.

The Department of Education and the ASTI have so far failed to reach agreement in recent months on the issue of pay for teachers who supervise classes and substitute for colleagues.

In a statement this evening, the ASTI dismissed plans by Education Minister, Noel Dempsey, to hold meetings in order to clarify the interpretation on the deal on offer to address the issues of supervision and substitution.

The ASTI says that prior to any ballot on the existing offer taking place its members will have in their possession the relevant documentation from the department of education dealing with supervision and substitution.

They also have the joint operational guidelines from the management bodies for second level schools as well as a summary of the supervision and substitution scheme.

The ASTI says it is difficult to know what further information can be obtained by the Minister if he goes ahead with such meetings, as its members already possess all the facts.
