Trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Seamus Heffernan notched a big-race double as Dylan Thomas and Queen Cleopatra lifted both Classic trials at Leopardstown to cap a big day for the Ballydoyle team.
Dylan Thomas started the ball rolling with a workmanlike victory in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial.
Heffernan always had the 11-2 shot well placed on the rails as his stablemate Altius set the pace with the favourite Heliostatic also close up.
Dylan Thomas went on as the field turned for home and he galloped on resolutely to hold O’Brien’s other runner Mountain by a length and a half.
British raider Youmzain, trained by Mick Channon, was just a short head behind in third.
Dylan Thomas was cut to 10-1 from 16-1 for the Vodafone Derby with William Hill while Stan James go 14-1 from 20-1.
Although O’Brien will consider the June 3 Classic, he is not convinced the Danehill colt will see out the trip
“We will have to have a good look at Epsom after that,” said O’Brien, speaking from Longchamp where he sent out Aussie Rules to take the French 2000 Guineas.
“He will come on for the run but we couldn’t be sure he would stay a mile and a half.”
Heffernan added: “He had a good blow there. He’s a big, genuine colt and he could be a Derby horse somewhere.”
O’Brien and Heffernan completed their 15-1 brace on horses owned by Sue Magnier when Queen Cleopatra took the Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial.
Like Dylan Thomas, Queen Cleopatra was always in the front rank as Queen Of Rap took the field along in the Group Three contest over a mile.
Heffernan kicked on over a furlong out on the 6-4 favourite, getting first run on Modeeroch to win by three-quarters of a length. Tamazug was half-a-length away in third.
Queen Cleopatra, who was having her third start of the season, was cut to 33-1 from 50-1 for the Vodafone Oaks.
Heffernan said: “It’s taken her two runs to come right. She quickened well one and a half furlongs out.”
Johnny Murtagh completed a 48-1 double on Medico (5-1) in the Carrickmones Maiden and Arch Rebel (7-1) in the Listed Amethyst Stakes.
