Leo Varadkar wants to bring back Christmas Bonus

Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar told the Dáil tonight that he will be seeking approval from Cabinet for the Christmas Bonus to be paid this year.

The payment was introduced in 1980 and was abolished in 2009.

The last Government introduced a partial payment in 2014 followed by an increase last year.

During the debate on the Revised Estimates at his department, Mr Varadkar said that the 2015 outturn included expenditure of €197m on the payment of a Christmas Bonus.

The decision will be made on Budget Day in October.
