Former British rocker Gary Glitter is expected to go on trial in southern Vietnam late next month, accused of committing obscene acts with two girls aged 10 and 11, officials said today.
“We are considering the case,” said Ta Quoc Viet, head of the Criminal Court in Ba Ria Vung Tau province. “We expect to put him on trial in the second half of next month.”
Earlier this month, Glitter, 61, who rose to fame as a flamboyant glam rocker in the 1970s, was accused of kissing and fondling the girls and engaging in other physical acts at his rental home in the resort city of Vung Tau last year, Ba Ria Vung Tau, provincial deputy chief prosecutor Nguyen Van Xung, said last week.
The charges carry prison terms of three to seven years, he said.
Viet said the court will also decide whether the trial would be open to the public or be held behind closed doors.
Vietnamese laws allow a tria to be held in closed sessions if it involves a state secret or dignity of a victim needs to be protected such as in a case of rape or sexual abuse involving a minor, he said.
