A claim by a Government minister that there have been several attempts by women to have abortion on the basis of being suicidal has sparked a fresh political row.

In a debate on MidWest and NorthWest Radio, Marine Minister Frank Fahey said he is aware of an occasion where the medical profession has refused to carry out an abortion in such a situation.

He said it was only through delicate handling of the situation that the issue was dealt with without breaking the law.

The Fine Gael leader Michael Noonan, who was also on the show at the time, described the statement as 'an extraordinary revelation' and has challenged the Taoiseach in the Dail to clarify the remarks.
