Up to 60 people in Co Louth could be out of work following reports that Heinz food company are to make changes to their operations.

It is reported there could be up to 250 redundancies across Ireland and the UK.

Louth TD Seamus Kirk is calling on the Jobs Minister Richard Bruton to contact management at Heinz at it's operations in Dundalk to clarify its position.

Deputy Kirk said Dundalk cannot afford to see more people lose their jobs.

"We really need reassurance here in north Louth, there is a rich industrial tradition in Dundalk," he said.

"There has been pretty useful job announcements for the town in recent times, we need a consolidation of the position

"When we look at the unemployment register locally from the Dundalk exchange, there is simply too many people unemployed in the area."
