Limerick feud 'out of control', court hears
The Limerick feud has escalated out of control again a senior detective told a court today.
Detective Garda Brian Sugrue was giving evidence in the case of two men charged with causing criminal damage to a car which was being driven by a relative of murdered Limerick crime boss, Kieran Keane.
Ger Dundon (aged 19), Hyde Road, Limerick and Ger Galvin (aged 18) Lenihan Avenue, Limerick, are both charged with causing criminal damage to a car in the Henry Street area of Limerick city on October 2 last.
Both men appeared before Limerick District Court this afternoon where the court heard that the alleged offence was related to a feud which has claimed a number of lives in recent years.
Outlining the State's objection to bail, Det Garda Brian Sugrue told Judge William Earley that both men were "intimately involved" in the Limerick feud which he added had escalated in recent days when a fire-arm was discharged.
The garda witness said that Mr Dundon had aligned himself to one side of the feud and alleged that he would continue to involve himself in this feud if he was granted bail.
"He (Mr Dundon) is one of the core people in the feud and he has access to firearms," alleged Det Gda Sugrue.
Solicitor for Mr Dundon, Aeneas McCarthy said there was no evidence to support this allegation and applied for bail on behalf of his client. Det Garda Sugrue alleged that Mr Galvin had also aligned himself to one of the gangs involved in the feud "which has escalated out of control again".
The court heard that extra garda manpower had been brought to Limerick from outside to help local gardai deal with the situation. Solicitor Aeneas McCarthy said Mr Galvin had never been charged or convicted of any offence related to the feud.
Mr McCarthy said his client was "effectively guilty by association".
Judge Earley refused bail applications for both men and remanded them in custody until November 2 next when they are due to appear again before Limerick District Court.
