US President Barack Obama will lead the nation in a moment of silence today to honour the Arizona congresswoman who was critically wounded and the others who were killed or injured in a shooting rampage in Tucson.

Mr Obama said the tribute will bring the nation together in prayer or reflection while keeping Republican Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims and their families close at heart.

The Supreme Court plans to convene early so the judges can observe the moment of silence.

Ms Giffords remains in a critical condition in a Tucson hospital after she was shot in the head at close range.

Six people were killed and 13 others injured in the attack outside a Tucson supermarket on Saturday.

Federal prosecutors have charged 22-year old Jared Loughner over the shootings.
