Arsenal defender Ashley Cole has agreed to extend his contract at Highbury by three years, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

The England international, who has two years remaining on his current contract, will sign a new deal which is expected to keep him at Arsenal until the summer of 2007.

Announcing the news this afternoon, Wenger said: "He has not yet put pen to paper, but he will extend his contract and we’ll announce it when it is all ready. In principle, it is agreed."

Cole began his football career as a trainee at Highbury and returned to become a first-team regular following a term on loan at Crystal Palace in 1999.

The 21-year-old has also secured a regular place in the England international team.
