Labour has described the new financial incentive scheme designed to reduce the cost of drugs to the State as 'discriminatory'.

Labour has described the new financial incentive scheme designed to reduce the cost of drugs to the State as 'discriminatory'.

Under the new scheme, GPs will receive £345 per annum for treating the new group of over 70s who have been awarded the medical card, many of whom could be on substantial incomes.

This compares with £100 per year for existing over 70s.

Doctors will also be rewarded for reducing the quantities of drugs administered and using generic rather than branded ones.

Labour health spokesperson Liz McManus said the situation is bound to lead to a two-tier health service.
