Walcott hopes to emulate Ronaldo

Theo Walcott is looking to emulate the World Cup exploits of record-breaking striker Ronaldo after comparing his experience in Germany this summer to the Brazilian's first taste of football's showpiece event in 1994.

The 17-year-old was a shock inclusion in the England squad that reached the quarter-finals but, like Ronaldo 12 years previously, did not see any action.

However, Walcott believes he benefited from the experience and is optimistic he can follow the same path as Ronaldo, who went on to become the tournament's record goalscorer this summer.

"I just feel I was lucky to be a part of it, and I certainly learnt a lot," Walcott told the Daily Express.

"I had to learn how to deal with pressure and, long-term, it will prove to be a good all-round learning experience.

"Ronaldo went to the World Cup with Brazil when he was 17 and didn't play, but it didn't do him any harm.

"I just hope it has prepared me for future World Cup tournaments.

"People tell me I am very mature for a 17-year-old and I suppose I have had to grow up quickly. I don't think a 17-year-old should have to deal with as much as I have had to."

Since the World Cup, Walcott has been starring for England's Under-21 side, coming of the bench against Germany last week to net two stunning goals which cemented a place in next year's European Championship finals.

He also made his first start for Arsenal on Saturday and is determined to regain his place in the senior England squad.

He said: "I need to make my name for Arsenal first. I can only play for England if I am playing consistently well for my club. It is one step at a time."
