The Department of Agriculture is investigating the discovery of traces of bone in two animal feed shipments imported from Germany to Ireland.

The material was found during testing of the sugar beet pulp, which was imported between October 18th and 22nd.

Some of the feed was supplied to four outlets in the Republic and three in the North.

The department said the bone traces were not the same as meat and bonemeal, which is banned from animal feed under strict BSE controls.

It said the potential danger to animal and human health was negligible, but the material was being withdrawn nonetheless as a precaution.

The European Commission has also been notified.
