Viewing figures for the FA Cup final peaked at 13.7 million – the biggest audience for almost a decade.
The number of viewers tuning in to watch Arsenal’s victory over Manchester United on BBC and Sky made it the biggest sporting peak audience this year.
It was also the the biggest match audience for the FA Cup final since Chelsea v Middlesbrough in 1997, and the highest peak quarter-hour audience since Manchester United v Liverpool in 1996.
Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick told www.thefa.com: “The viewing figures for Saturday’s Cup final were tremendous. They graphically illustrate the unique and enduring appeal of The FA Cup.
“There has been a significant rise in viewing figures for the cup throughout this season matched by extremely healthy attendances for all rounds of the competition.
“This suggests very clearly that the FA Cup still has a central place in the hearts of football fans.
“We look forward to further increases next season as we build up to the FA Cup final’s return to the Wembley Stadium.”
Meanwhile, two United players in the FA Cup final squad arrived in the central African country of Malawi today as part of an FA delegation on a goodwill mission to promote Aids awareness and prevention.
Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville and fellow England international David James are overseeing children’s coaching sessions and games, promoting HIV/Aids messages, visiting various HIV/Aids clinics and hospitals, and spreading their message through the media.
FA executive director David Davies, who is also on the trip, said: “There are very few opportunities in the hectic schedule of English football when players can do something like this, but we have found a window to do it with their active support and enthusiasm.
“The players have been working with us on this project over many months. They recognise that football can be a power for good in combating the scourge of HIV/Aids in Africa and they have been determined to make the visit happen.
“They are giving their time for an arduous trip when they could be having a break, but it will be hugely worthwhile.”
