Centurion Fallon turns up the heat

Kieren Fallon pledged to concentrate every effort into securing a seventh jockeys’ title after riding his 100th winner of the season at Lingfield today.

Kieren Fallon pledged to concentrate every effort into securing a seventh jockeys’ title after riding his 100th winner of the season at Lingfield today.

The most recent of the Irishman’s championships came in 2003 and he admitted it would be difficult to prevent the leader Paul Hanagan from retaining his crown.

The century came from an old ally, Wetherby trainer Robin Bastiman, who provided Fallon with the ride on Miss Blink, the 11-4 favourite for the Oilfield Insurance Agencies Handicap.

Hitting the front with two furlongs remaining of the testing grass course, Miss Blink held out to finish three lengths clear.

“When you’re on 99 the next one seems harder to get,” said Fallon.

“I thought I’d do it last night (at Kempton) but it didn’t happen and it’s nice to get it.”

When asked about a title challenge, he added: “I’ll be trying. I’m confident, but it will be tough to pull back 11 or so from Paul at this stage of the season, as he has got a strong team.”

Bastiman recalled: “I’ve got a picture at home of my son leading Kieren back in after a winner – my son looks about 15 then and has passed 30 now, so it was a long time ago.

“We came down here because in a 0-65 handicap in the north she would have to carry 10st.

“It was just 9st 7lb for this, which helped as she has a light frame.”

Integrity looked a juvenile with a bright future as he made an appealing winning debut under William Buick in division one of the Ladbrokes Mobile Median Auction Maiden Stakes.

Jeremy Noseda had entered the sprint-bred colt in the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy and word had clearly spread as he was returned the 5-6 favourite.

Owner Yvonne Jacques, who has five youngsters with Noseda and other horses spread out with Sir Henry Cecil, Marco Botti and Richard Hannon, said: “Jeremy thought he’d do well and he didn’t look green at all – he looked like a three-year-old.”

Cryptically, Miss Jacques reckoned she might have a better one still to run.

The greater experience of Michael Blanshard’s Dishy Guru (6-1) counted over the wayward 11-10 favourite Princess Of Orange in division two.

Vinnie Jones (3-1) has a connection with his namesake, the footballing hardman-turned-thespian, and showed his own appetite for a scrap in the Tersus Laundry Nursery.

John Gosden’s chestnut had shown some promise in his three previous runs but he needed Buick’s full force to shade Clone Devil and 5-2 favourite Dark Ambition by a neck and half a length respectively.

Gosden’s assistant Les Reynolds explained: “The owner, Colin Murfitt, is a big pal of Vinnie’s, and I believe Vinnie has threatened to turn up and watch him, but he’s often busy with acting and his schedule in America.

“He has had horses with the boss before, anyway.

“This horse has really grown up, he’s a little professional.”

John Berry was grateful for the efforts of another in-form jockey, the dynamic Cathy Gannon, as she

helped 5-2 favourite Silken Thoughts clean up in the Tersus Laundry Services Handicap.

“Cathy has been on board both times she has won. She’s such a good jockey,” praised Berry.

“I actually pulled her out at Sandown last week because it was very soft, but she has now shown she acts on all ground.

“Hopefully she can run two or three more times this season.”

A forgettable Tersus Claiming Stakes saw James Millman and Royal Opera (6-4) wear down 4-6 favourite Avon River.

Colorado Gold (12-1) later showed an earnest attitude under Pat Cosgrave to take the concluding Play Roulette At ladbrokes.com Handicap for rookie trainer Ed de Giles.
