The Government's Consumer Strategy Group has reportedly concluded that the high prices charged for a range of goods and services in Ireland are unjustified.
Reports this morning said the group had found that the high prices charged by pubs, banks, doctors, dentists, restaurants and many other businesses cannot be explained by high operating costs.
The group has reportedly made a series of recommendations on how to address the situation, including the repeal of the Groceries Order, which bans below-cost selling.
This morning's reports said other recommendations included the establishment of a national consumer agency, the liberalisation of licensing laws and the promotion of cheaper, generic medicines.
