The Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Conor Lenihan, said today that Ireland will increase its overseas aid over the coming years.

Minister Lenihan said he is welcoming the announcement that the G8 nations are to cancel the debt of the world's poorest nations, but admits that this must be followed up by an increase in aid.

He also said that further concessions will be made in trade with African nations.

The minister claimed that unless these steps are taken, the benefits of debt relief will not be felt.
