National day of water charges and austerity protests

A national day of protests against water charges and austerity will take place this afternoon.

The protests are part of a sustained campaign planned for the weeks coming up to the General Election and will include another demonstration on the last Saturday before the Election.

The rallies, organised by the Right2Water Campaign, will be held in over 30 locations nationwide.

Right 2 Water spokesman Brendan Ogle has said households are being asked to pay 78% of the bill for water, despite only using 10%.

"90% of the water that we use is used by corporations and agriculture - just 10% is used by households," he said.

"However, those households are being asked to take onboard 78% of the costs."
