Soccer: FG may revive Eircom Park

The possibility of resurrecting the FAI’s abandoned Eircom Park is being raised by the Fine Gael deputy leader Jim Mitchell, if his party gets back into power.

The possibility of resurrecting the FAI’s abandoned Eircom Park is being raised by the Fine Gael deputy leader Jim Mitchell, if his party gets back into power.

The party is to invite senior figures from the football body for talks about the possibility of pushing on with the project.

The question of how to provide the country with state of the art sport facilities remains one of the main political issues.

The Government has already called in outside experts to scrutinise plans for the national stadium.

Fine Gael’s Jim Mitchell is now holding out the possibility that there may still be life in Eircom Park.

He insists the idea of Stadium Ireland is crazy and it would be much better to spend £500m on improving sports grounds around the country and funding the now abandoned FAI project and Croke Park.

As yet there has been no reaction from the football association to the Fine Gael proposal.
