A 43-year-old man appeared in court today charged with assault in connection with the death of a 47-year-old woman.

A murder investigation was launched after Janet Chaney, 47, died on Wednesday.

An ambulance was called to her home in Oaklands Park, Cox’s Demesne in Dundalk, Co Louth, but she was pronounced dead just over an hour later at Louth County Hospital.

Post-mortem tests revealed numerous marks on her body were consistent with an attack.

Unemployed David Hughes, also from Oakland’s Park, Dundalk, was charged with assault causing harm to Ms Chaney.

He was remanded in custody at Drogheda District Court with consent to bail of €500 and an independent surety of €5,000.

He is due to reappear in court next Wednesday.

Ms Chaney lived at home with her partner. Her three grown-up children are thought to live in the UK.
