Jim Furyk described his US Open victory – his first major – as “beyond my dreams”.
The 33-year-old American said after beating Australian Stephen Leaney at Olympia Fields near Chicago: “This is a proud day and it is very special.
“I had a difficult time wishing my dad happy Father’s Day this morning. He and my mum have been very involved in my career and this is one heck of a present.”
Furyk’s walk to victory had an unexpected moment when a blonde streaker came under the ropes and approached him with roses.
“I was definitely caught off guard,” Furyk added. “I turned around and she was already up on top of me.
“I had to back off from that situation and get back to playing golf. It was more like the British Open there.”
Furyk bogeyed the last two holes, but still equalled the 72-hole US Open record with his eight-under total of 272.
Leaney was behind in second place and there was then a further four-stroke gap to Masters champion Mike Weir and Kenny Perry. England’s Justin Rose was joint fifth.
