Man charged over 'tiger' robbery
A man was charged in court this morning in connection with a so-called tiger robbery in Dublin last week where more than €300,000 was withdrawn by a bank employee whose partner had been kidnapped.
The 22-year-old woman was forced to take the money from the Permanent TSB branch in Phibsboro last Tuesday after being sent a photograph via her mobile phone of her partner with a gun to his head.
The money was later recovered at Broombridge railway station in Cabra, in Dublin that day. A man, who was arrested on the same date, was brought before Dublin District Court this morning.
The defendant, Mr Tony Quinn (aged 29), with an address at Park View, Park Close, Balbutcher Lane, in Ballymun, was charged with handling €318,000 in cash, at Broombridge, on September 22 last, contrary to Section 17 of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.
Dressed in a white designer shirt, black trousers and black shoes, he remained silent during his brief court appearance.
Detective Sergeant Bob O’Reilly told Judge Hugh O’Donnell he arrested Mr Quinn on Sunday morning at 11.45am at Mountjoy Garda station for the purpose of charging.
The defendant made no reply when charged, he also said.
Det-Sgt O’Reilly applied for a remand in custody with consent to bail.
Defence solicitor Michael Hanahoe told Judge O’Donnell that there was no objection to bail in the sum of €10,000 and on condition his client surrendered his passport and signed on daily at Ballymun Garda station.
Mr Hanahoe said the cash bail was to be lodged by the defendant’s father.
Judge O’Donnell remanded the defendant in custody with consent to bail to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Friday, October 2 next.
Legal aid was granted.
