Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed striker Chris Sutton will be out for four to six weeks with ligament damage.

The £6m forward was taken off on a stretcher after landing awkwardly during an aerial challenge with Livingston defender Marvin Andrews on Boxing Day.

O’Neill said: ‘‘It will be about four to six weeks. That’s what the surgeon said. There is nothing broken. It is ligament damage but it is a blow for us.’’

Sutton will now almost certainly miss the CIS Cup semi-final against Rangers at the start of February as well crucial Premier League and Scottish Cup games.

Defender Joss Valgaeren is suspended for the trip to Dundee United after his dismissal against Livingston on Wednesday.
