The US Embassy said today that an US civilian working with the embassy was killed during an attack outside the Green Zone in Baghdad.
Spokesman Pete Mitchell said the man was travelling in a vehicle outside the protected Green Zone, which houses the US and Iraqi leadership, when he came under gunfire yesterday afternoon.
The man’s identity is being withheld until his next of kin have been notified, Mitchell said. The civilian was not a member of the US State Department though he did work under the US mission in Baghdad, he said.
“Our strongest condolences go out to the family,” he said. “This is certainly not the best time to hear such news on Thanksgiving. Our hearts go out to the family.”
