Thompson: Chelsea success not as sweet

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has claimed Chelsea’s success will be tainted because it has been bankrolled by Roman Abramovich.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has claimed Chelsea’s success will be tainted because it has been bankrolled by Roman Abramovich.

Thompson, who was former manager Gerard Houllier’s assistant at Anfield until last summer, believes any achievements at Chelsea will not match those of Manchester United, Arsenal and before that Liverpool.

Jose Mourinho won his first silverware on Sunday when his Chelsea side came from behind to beat Liverpool in the Carling Cup final at the Millennium Stadium.

Thompson told BBC Radio Five Live: “You talk about Chelsea and yes they’ve got all this kind of money and people want to win medals – but is it going to be winning medals if it is money-orientated?

“Will it be the same as what Manchester United and Arsenal have done and as what Liverpool players did in the past? I don’t think it will have that same sweet feeling.”

Reds captain Steven Gerrard, who Liverpool have relied upon for nearly two seasons, scored an own goal which took Chelsea level and has been singled out for criticism by certain supporters.

And Thompson, incensed by comments made by Liverpool fans in a radio phone-in show, defended Gerrard’s performance in Cardiff.

He added: “It was not the best and I think Stevie would be the first one to hold his hands up.

“He never really got going, he started off well like a lot of the Liverpool players but certainly he wasn’t a driving influence.

“When I was assistant manager of Liverpool last year, the last thing I wanted to do was listen to phone-ins. It just so happens that I do now and I’ve listened to some last night (Sunday) and it was absolutely outrageous.

“I hope that in the cold light of day they think: ‘What have I done?’ and ‘What have I said about Steven Gerrard?'"

Thompson was also angered by inevitable quips about the howler being Gerrard’s first Chelsea goal, due to the England midfielder being constantly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

“I should think he’s disgusted as well, that comment was diabolical. I just hope Stevie takes this with a pinch of salt,” he said.

“I know it will be difficult but he is committed. When they talk about Steven Gerrard and how – he carried the club last year, he’s carried the club this year - he’s always put the club first.

“Liverpool will think about it but it will all be down to Stevie in the end. I hope he will commit himself to Liverpool. I hope Champions League football will keep him at Liverpool either as Champions League winners or as finishing fourth (in the Premiership).

“There will be some soul-searching but the way things have gone lately I hope he’s hardening to the fact and he will have big decisions to make. But I hope that it is to the benefit of Stevie Gerrard and I hope that it’s with Liverpool."
