Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is “broadly happy” with the content of the expected IRA statement, it emerged today.

Mr Ahern was told of the general text of the eagerly-awaited declaration this morning.

“The Taoiseach has been informed of the gist of the IRA statement and is broadly happy with what he has heard,” a Government source said.

Mr Ahern and Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern are both awaiting developments at Government Buildings in Dublin.

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams is expected to hold a news conference about the statement in a Ballsbridge hotel this afternoon.

It will coincide with press conferences in Washington and London and briefings in Brussels.

Mr Adams said: “The Dublin political establishment in particular will have a lot of soul-searching to do if those in political leadership are to meet the needs of the upcoming period.”
