Stan James 2000 Guineas hero George Washington enjoyed a gentle canter at Naas after racing last night as he continued his preparations for a return to competitive action.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt has not been seen since chasing home Araafa in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh in May. It was later discovered he had a hip injury and he has been on the easy list since.
The son of Danehill went around six furlongs under Kieren Fallon in company with stablemate River Tiber, who was partnered by Seamus Heffernan.
He was on his best behaviour beforehand having been accompanied by a pony into the parade ring and down to around a furlong before he turned to gallop back.
With a helicopter taking off as the colt was in the paddock before the gallop and a band playing nearby, O’Brien was not thrilled that his charge appeared unfazed.
“I was delighted and he behaved brilliantly. He was impeccable. He couldn’t have worked better.
"He walked out of the parade ring like a man and Kieren was over the moon,” he said.
“All he (George Washington) wanted was a little bit of reassurance. The pony will go with him from now on. The lads (Fallon and Heffernan) were both delighted.
“He has got very strong and powerful and looks like a sprinter. He could go for the Celebration Mile at Goodwood (August 27) or the Desmond Stakes at Leopardstown (August 20).”
