Readers' View: Virtually no-one is seeking a border poll in the immediate future

While I mostly agree with the insightful letter from James Woods [IE 30/12/19], it should be pointed out that virtually no-one is seeking a border poll in the immediate future.

Rather, many, including Sinn Féin, are proposing a Forum to discuss and plan for re-unification before such a poll so that the chaos of Brexit can be avoided.

Many people have told me they cannot understand why Mr Varadkar and Mr Martin would oppose such a sensible proposition.

Perhaps the answer lies in the prescient prediction of James Connolly that partition of Ireland "would mean a carnival of reaction both North and South, would set back the wheels of progress, would destroy the oncoming unity of the Irish Labour movement and paralyse all advanced movements whilst it endured."

It is not so surprising, then, that the conservative parties, FF and FG who, along with an equally conservative church, dominated Irish people's lives for almost 100 years, would oppose such a progressive proposition.
