The Taoiseach Brian Cowen has confirmed the €22bn of taxpayers' money pumped into Anglo Irish Bank will not be returned or make a profit.

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen has confirmed the €22bn of taxpayers' money pumped into Anglo Irish Bank will not be returned or make a profit.

Last week the bank's chief executive declared the lion's share of the capital injection would "never be seen again".

In the Dáil it took four attempts by Opposition leaders to get an admission from the Taoiseach.

But finally, under pressure from Eamon Gilmore, Brian Cowen admitted the money was gone.
