The leader of the Labour Party is calling on the Taoiseach to boycott the election campaign of one of his backbencher's over remarks he made about asylum seekers.

Cork FF TD Noel O'Flynn described asylum seekers as 'spongers' and 'freeloaders'.

However, despite criticism from Bertie Ahern, the Minister for Finance, Charlie McCreevy, last night attended a fundraising dinner for Deputy O'Flynn.

Ruairi Quinn said Fianna Fail must show a united front in condemning the Cork TD's comments. "I believe that the Taoiseach should exercise leadership and decisive action in respect of not only what Noel O'Flynn has said, but for sanctioning him within the rules and regulations of the Fianna Fail party," he said.
