Derby boss Paul Jewell is hoping new signing Danny Mills will help reignite the Rams in their quest for a footballing miracle.
Since his arrival at Pride Park at the end of November, Jewell has often bemoaned the lack of characters in the squad.
The arrival of Mills, signed on loan until the end of the season from Manchester City, should at least put some passion back into a club staring at relegation.
A failure to agree a permanent deal with Charlton, where Mills had been on loan for four months, should prove to Jewell’s benefit.
“I spoke to (Charlton manager) Alan Pardew, and he says they are missing him in the dressing room already because he is that type of character,” said Jewell of the 19-times capped former England right-back.
“We need some leaders and some experience, and he’ll get among the players and hopefully he’ll lead by example.
“He is a battler, someone who has a good reputation after playing at the highest level, and so is a good acquisition to the squad.
“He won’t be fearful of the task. He has been around the block. He has seen it, done it in the Champions League and in international football. It won’t faze him.”
Mills, who will make his debut in tomorrow’s FA Cup third-round tie with Sheffield Wednesday at Pride Park, has vowed to give it his all as he seeks survival and a permanent deal.
“I’ve told the manager he will get professionalism, hard work and commitment, and that’s what I expect of the other players,” said the 30-year-old.
“Their confidence is low, and morale is not fantastic, so the manager is looking to bring in a few characters, some experience, and hopefully I can provide that.
“But then I take that as read because I’ve been around a bit and bring with me a wealth of experience.
“I’ve worked with some very good coaches, and learned a lot from them, but then I’ve worked with some terrible ones as well – and even learned from them.
“I know I won’t win any popularity contests with opposing fans, but I will give my all week in and week out and try to impress.
“Because from what I’ve seen so far, this is a place where I’d like to stay permanently – whether we’re in the Premier League or Championship.
“I realise the situation Derby are in, and it’s a challenge, but I relish the opportunity to play football, and that’s what I want to do.”
Mills’ presence will be vital as Derby are again ravaged by injury with Stephen Bywater, Jay McEveley, Dean Leacock, Andy Todd, Dave Jones, Stephen Pearson, Rob Earnshaw and Marc Edworthy all out.
Giles Barnes is doubtful with a hamstring problem and Claude Davis a knee injury, although Jewell is hoping both will be available to face the Owls.
Andy Griffin is also sidelined but he has been given permission by Derby to speak to Stoke regarding a possible move.
