CSO: 2002 unemployment rate was 8.8%

The unemployment rate in Ireland last year was 8.8%, according to census figures released by the Central Statistics Office today.

The unemployment rate in Ireland last year was 8.8%, according to census figures released by the Central Statistics Office today.

The CSO said unemployment in 2002 was higher in urban areas than in rural areas, but Co Donegal had the highest unemployment rate of any single county.

The figures released today by the CSO also showed that one-fifth of Irish people have third-level qualifications, with more women than men now in education.
