Man dies in road accident after attending funeral
A 26-year-old van driver killed in a two-vehicle collision yesterday died just hours after attending his uncle's removal.
Brian Caroll, from Ballyagran in Co Limerick, was killed yesterday morning when the car he was travelling in was involved in a collision with a minibus.
The accident happened at around 3.30am in Castlemahon on a road known as the Bruff Line, three miles outside the Co Limerick town of Newcaslte West.
Mr Carroll was a back-seat passenger in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people travelling in the car were hospitalised after the collision and their injuries were not serious.
The first person to die on Limerick roads this year, Brian Carroll worked as a van driver for a food company.
Just hours before his death, the 26-year-old had attended the removal of his late uncle, Maurice 'Moss' Hurley, from Newcastle West.
Mr Hurley was married to Brian Carroll's aunt and passed away last week. Both families were said to be in shock today as they tried to come to terms with the double tragedy.
"It's a very difficult time for both families," said one local. Brian Carroll's removal will take place from his home this tomorrow evening at 8pm to St Michael's Church in Ballyagran.
Funeral mass will take place on Wednesday at 12.30pm with burial afterwards in Colemanswell Cemetery.
Mr Carroll is survived by his parents Sean and Betty and his two brothers and three sisters.
A total of 19 people were killed on Limerick roads last year. The highest number of road deaths in the county in recent years was in 2002 when 22 people died.
