Italy's police chief has admitted officers used excessive force at the Genoa G8 summit.

Italy's police chief has admitted officers used excessive force at the Genoa G8 summit.

Gianni de Gennaro said officers will be severely punished if their actions are found to be illegal.

He made his comments to a parliamentary inquiry into the summit violence.

Mr De Gennaro said the unrest was started by "violent criminals".

But he said it led "in some cases to an excess in the use of force from certain units."

One demonstrator was shot dead by a policeman while dozens were injured at July's summit.

Many protesters said they were beaten up and strip-searched.
