Chief Executive of the Health and Safety Authority Tom Beegan has warned, for example, that those interested in buying Christmas lights must make sure that they are structurally sound and not faulty.

Meanwhile, consumers are also being warned of the dangers of over-spending.

The Irish League of Credit Unions says the best way to avoid it is to use cash instead of plastic.

With only five shopping days left, the pressure and temptation to spend beyond our means is exceptional at this time of year, according to the league.
