Ahern and McDowell set to face further Dáil fire today

The Taoiseach and the Tánaiste are expected to come under further fire in the Dáil today about the controversy surrounding payments to Bertie Ahern in 1993 and 1994.

The Taoiseach and the Tánaiste are expected to come under further fire in the Dáil today about the controversy surrounding payments to Bertie Ahern in 1993 and 1994.

Yesterday, Mr Ahern admitted his decision to accept the money was an error of judgement and apologised for his actions.

However, he refused to admit he was wrong, saying the payments breached no laws or ethical codes.

The Progressive Democrats subsequently gave their full backing to the Taoiseach, saying his explanation of the situation was satisfactory.

The Tánaiste Michael McDowell said Mr Ahern made a serious error of judgement, but was still fit for office despite his mistakes.
