Chelsea, already through, did their Catalan rivals no favours by losing 1-0 to Werder Bremen to leave Barca needing victory over the Germans in their final match to progress from Group A.

Ludovic Giuly opened the scoring for Barca after five minutes when Levski failed to clear Gianluca Zambrotta’s cross from the right.

The home side threatened to equalise but Andres Iniesta’s strike after 65 minutes ended their hopes of salvaging something from the match.

While Liverpool wrapped up top spot with victory over PSV Eindhoven, Bordeaux beat Galatasaray 3-1 as they look to secure a UEFA Cup spot via third place.

Alejandro Alonso broke the deadlock before former Sunderland striker Lilian Laslandes and Julien Faubert added goals early in the second half.

Former Arsenal and West Brom midfielder Junichi Inamoto pulled one back for the Turkish side.
