Wenger won't bust a gut in transfer market

Arsene Wenger will do his best to add some fresh experience to the Arsenal squad this summer – but maintains it will not be at any cost.

And the Frenchman has leapt to the defence of his players after they came in for fierce criticism from shareholders last night.

The Gunners head to Old Trafford tomorrow, where a draw would crown Manchester United Barclays Premier League champions once again.

Much has been made of Arsenal’s inability to mount a serious title challenge this season, while Wenger’s young side were also dumped out of the FA Cup by Chelsea at Wembley before being handed a European lesson when outclassed over two legs in the Champions League semi-final against United.

There have been many calls – from fans and ex-players alike – for Wenger to spend heavily on experienced men this summer to add to the talent of youth.

The Arsenal manager was pressed on the issue once again during a shareholders forum at Emirates Stadium last night, echoing the calls of Russia-based billionaire Alisher Usmanov, the Gunners’ second-highest stakeholder, who wants the club to “step up” their transfer dealings and has offered his help towards easing some of the debt burden.

However, Wenger – who has won three league titles and reached the Champions League final in 2006, but has not secured silverware now for four successive seasons – is adamant he will not “bust” the club just to satisfy demand for a big-name signing.

“I believe every manager has the same problem, to manage within his own resources,” said Wenger, whose team are now secure in fourth place.

“I look now like I do not want to spend money, but I have nothing against spending money.

“I just feel we have a team who can be very competitive and we want, as always, to manage this club within its resources. I will do that.

“If you want me to get the club bust, I am not the person to do that, that is for sure.”

Wenger added: “I believe in this team and from what I have seen in this team, that makes me quite optimistic.

“These players have the quality to beat anybody else.

“If we can add one or two players with the resources we have, then we will do it.”

At last night’s forum, Wenger claimed his youngsters had been hampered by the criticism aimed at them over the course of another difficult campaign.

“It is easy to sit in the stand and say that they are not up for the fight,” he said in the Daily Mail.

“What they have done in this negative environment shows what they can do, it shows they can stand up to their responsibilities.”

Striker Emmanuel Adebayor was singled out as an example of an under-performing star during a tetchy meeting, but Wenger insisted he was capable of reclaiming his old form.

“All the big clubs wanted him last summer and it will be the same again this summer. Some players have bad periods,” he said.

“If they don’t do well it is because they have lost confidence. But the only way to help a guy who has lost confidence is to support him. Slaughtering him it does not help him.”

Meanwhile, Czech international Tomas Rosicky, out since January 2008, has now returned to training following hamstring and leg problems, but will not play again this season.

The 28-year-old told www.arsenal.com: “I was a bit nervous. When you have been out for so long, you don’t know what to expect.

“I did not know if I would still have the same sense of the game, the same understanding, as I had before, but it was great and I did everything with the team.

“It has been a tough time for the medical staff and for me. I thank them.

“Of course I still have a lot of work to do before I will be 100%. I think I will not have a holiday like the other players over the summer.

“Now I have started training again I don’t want to stop.”

Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia (ankle) will miss the United game, but Russian playmaker Andrey Arshavin has recovered from a virus.
