A large fisherman’s demonstration on the largest Donegal island, Aranmore, is marring the casting of votes in the general election.

Islanders off Donegal become the first voters in Election 2002 when the polls open there at 10.30am.

The fishermen are calling on the people not to vote in protest at new EU-regulations.

Notices discouraging voting have been placed all around the island.

“The fishermen have sent leaflets to houses not to vote as a protest against the new regulations that Minister Fahey is imposing,” said Tony Gallagher, manager of the Aranmore Co-op.
