Police in Holland believe they have thwarted a plot to kidnap PSV Eindhoven striker Mateja Kezman.
The Serbo-Montenegrin frontman was, according to Eindhoven police, the target of a man believed to be acting alone who was arrested and then released due to a lack of evidence.
Kezman was the top scorer in Dutch football last season, hitting 35 goals as PSV succeeded Ajax as Eredivisie champions.
The man arrested was a countryman of Kezman, according to the police whose investigations continue into the alleged plot.
The kidnapping of famous players or their relatives has been widespread in South American football in recent seasons, while the brother of AC Milan’s Georgian defender Kakha Kaladze was snatched in Tbilisi two years ago and remains missing.
