Woman dies in Athlone house fire

An elderly women has died in a house fire which broke out at around 5.45am at the property in Cartrontroy, Athlone.

An elderly women has died in a house fire which broke out at around 5.45am at the property in Cartrontroy, Athlone.

The woman, in her 80s, died at the scene. Her husband, also in his 80s, was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, suffering from smoke inhalation.

Gardaí have preserved the scene for a technical examination but officers are not treating the fire as suspicious.
