Kubica to stay in ICU
Formula One driver Robert Kubica is to remain in intensive care for another two days following a nine-hour surgical procedure over the weekend.
The Pole had been due to be transferred to the accident and emergency department of the Santa Corona hospital in Pietra Ligure but will instead remain in the ICU ahead of what is anticipated to be his final surgical procedure on Wednesday.
Kubica suffered multiple fractures to his arm and leg and a partially severed right hand in a crash on the Ronde di Andora rally eight days ago.
The 26-year-old has spoken of his determination to return to action before the end of the year, although it is widely anticipated he will miss the entire 2011 Formula One season – with German Nick Heidfeld in line to replace him at Lotus Renault.
Reports emerged today that Kubica’s girlfriend had told Polish television her partner’s condition had deteriorated over the past couple of days, but today’s statement by the Santa Corona hospital appeared to ease those concerns.
“Robert Kubica’s condition is fine,” the statement read.
“Kubica will remain in intensive care for two more days to allow a full check-up and to avoid another change of department ahead of his next operation.
“His general condition is satisfactory enough as to allow his final surgical intervention to take place on Wednesday.”
On arrival at the hospital over a week ago Kubica underwent a seven-hour surgical procedure to save his right hand. The nine-hour operation over the weekend focused on injuries to his foot, shoulder and inner elbow, while Wednesday’s surgery will repair damage to the outer elbow.
