A file is being prepared for the DPP in connection with the deaths of a garda and a firefighter who were struck by a car near Foynes in Co Limerick yesterday morning.

Garda Brian Kelleher and fireman Michael Liston, aged 46 and 47, died after being struck by a black Audi while attending the scene of a previous accident on the N69.

An 18-year-old man was arrested following the incident, but was later released without charge.

Reports this morning say he was from Ballylongford in Co Kerry and was on his way to a late-night party in Limerick city at the time of the crash, which happened at around 5.30am.

The two victims were both married fathers, with seven children between them.

Local TD Willie O'Dea has described their deaths as a terrible tragedy and a huge loss to the community.
