Lawlor lawyers argue legal entitlement

The High Court has temporarily freed Liam Lawlor from prison so he can defend himself during a Dail debate on his resignation today.

Mr Lawlor’s lawyers argued this morning that their client is legally entitled to defend himself during the debate and reminded the judge that the beleaguered TD has not been charged with any criminal offence.

The High Court agreed to free Mr Lawlor for the duration of the debate and the subsequent vote, but he will have to return to Mountjoy Prison afterwards.

The motion being debated today calls on Mr Lawlor to resign from the Dail because of his repeated failure to cooperate with the Flood Tribunal.

The Dublin West TD is serving a 28-day prison term for not delivering adequate records of his financial dealings to Justice Fergus Flood and his inquiry team.
